Chapter Philanthropy & Service

Why is philanthropy important to Alpha Gam?

My name is Lizeth Ramirez and I am both humbled and grateful to be able to represent Alpha Gamma Delta as the Vice President of Philanthropy! Through the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, we support our philanthropic focus which is Fighting Hunger. In Alpha Gamma Delta we have two main functions of philanthropy: service and fundraising. Service is the hands-on portion of giving back to “the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied,” and living out our purpose. We are very passionate about giving back to our community through volunteer work. For example, we volunteer at the Community Food Bank in Birmingham by organizing donations, clearing pallets, and preparing boxes of food. The second part is fundraising, which consists of raising money to give towards non-profit organizations who share a mission of fighting hunger. Our chapter of Gamma Upsilon is proud to hold the most popular philanthropy event on campus, Lip Jam. Lip Jam consists of different Greek organizations on campus creating Lip Sync routines based on the theme that year. Previous themes include Boy Bands, Rock of Ages, and Movie Soundtracks. In the spring we proudly host, a fairly new event that is increasing in popularity, our Minute to Win It ExtravaGAMza. This event consists of several minute-long games set up for anyone to play, which encourages friendly competition among our Greek community. During the event, we sell popsicles and have a photo booth set up. We typically raise $2,000 or more through Lip Jam and $600 through Minute to Win It ExtravaGAMza. Donations are sent to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Furthermore, our chapter holds small events throughout the year. We hold canned food drives and coin drives, as well as make goody bags for our custodians and RA’s. Denzel Washington once said,” At the end of the day it’s not about what you have or even what you accomplished … it’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.” Philanthropy is arguably the most important thing about being an Alpha Gam because it gives us the opportunity to stand for something bigger than ourselves. It allows us as people to come together and create amazing things that contribute to helping those in our community. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to give back to our community and to touch the lives of others.
